How to make the most of your post-winter makeup

Julia Gralberg

The change of season calls for a change of makeup.

Dry and pale skin with chipped lips? Winter can be a pretty rough season for your skin

and although the coldest months of the year may officially be over, the result of months of chilly weather is most likely, flaky and parched skin.

To look at things from the bright side at least the makeup isn’t melting off your face in the heat, but it will probably be in desperate need for some glow.

So how do you get that J-Lo luminous skin looking like you’ve just come back from a Caribbean holiday? When in reality you’ve been wrapped up with a scarf covering half your face for months.

Well by following these easy makeup hacks you’ll be able to transform any tired winter skin into a beautiful and fresh-looking face in no time.

From bold lips to dramatic eyes, here’s how to create that perfect cold weather glam.

Hydrate

Hydration is your best friend!

Before even thinking about start applying any makeup make sure you’ve applied a moisturiser. To ensure your skin is soft and smooth wait a minute before applying foundation which, by the way, should be moisturising too. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen, although the sun isn’t as strong as during the summer months you still want to protect your skin from any UV rays.

Update your foundation shade

Naturally, your skin won’t be as dark and tanned as during the summer months so whatever you do, don’t hang on to old foundations. Instead, invest in a new shade to match your winter skin tone which is usually a few shades lighter. If your foundation tends to rub off on your clothes simply use pressed powder on top of the foundation to make sure the makeup is ‘locked in’.

Go for darker lipstick

Stay away from bright and pink lipsticks and instead explore darker shades such as deep red, cherry and maroon. Winter makeup is all about embracing bold colours so go for it. To avoid dry and cracked lips use a lip balm before applying the lipstick and a moisturising lip-gloss on top.

Get rid of dark circles

Cold weather can amplify dark circles under our eyes and make us look unnecessary tired. To get rid of any unwanted shadows under our eyes invest in a concealer. The yellow-based shades will give you the best cover. Apply after a rich eye-cream and before the foundation and powder.

Use kohl eyeliner

Make the most of your winter eyes by using a kohl eyeliner. Play around with cat eyes, smudged and smokey eyes for a dramatic effect. Avoid blue or green colours and instead opt for black and brown which look dramatic in contrast to pale winter skin.

Invest in a blush

Give those pale winter cheeks some colour.

Invest in a blush which should be in a peachy colour for fair skin and in more of a terracotta colour for darker skin. Avoid bronzers since it will look too fake against the winter skin. Use a blush brush and sweep the blush onto the apples of your cheeks and slightly under your cheekbones.
