How to make the perfect Negroni
With its simple conformation of equal parts gin, Campari and sweet vermouth – the dry and zingy negroni is one of the punchiest cocktails around! – stirred and served over ice with a twist of orange peel. The Negorni may be an uncomplicated cocktail but its perfect balance of flavors has made it one of our favourite aperitivos.
Negroni 101
Equipment/ingredients needed
- Mixing glass
- Bar Spoon
- Jigger (30ml)
- Ice
- Campari
- Rossa vermouth e.g martini robina, punte mez, antica formula
- Your favourite gin
- Strainer
- Orange and knife
- Rocks glass
Method
Step 1:
Pour 30mls gin/vermouth/campari into mixing glass
Step 2:
Stir to desired dilution
Step 3:
Strain over sphere/cube ice into rocks glass
Step 4:
Garnish with orange peel twist
Step 5:
Cut an orange disk to spray oils and discard
A brief history on negroni
The negroni is an adaption of the Americano, a simple blend of Campari, vermouth and soda. Story goes that the drink was invented in Florence back in 1919 when Count Negroni asked for a shot of gin in his Americano in place of soda – and the negroni was born! The Italians then adopted the drink as an appetite building pre-dinner aperitif or a palate-cleaning settler for afterwards.
The drink has seldom been tampered with since it was born. It has now become a super-modish choice in hipster pubs and cocktail bars where a whole new range of negronis are emerging …
