Acid-wash jeans, cabbage-patch dolls, Nintendo, big hair bands, Bob Ross(!!!). If you just giggled from reading these items, you almost surely grew up in the 80s. The era that brought the world together through films, music and questionable clothing choices is by far (in my opinion) the most epic decade of all. In celebration of the launch of Ovolo’s brand-spanking new radio station: radiovolo, we take a look at the top 10 reasons the 80s were in fact, epic…

Top Gun

One of the most iconic films of the decade, who could forget the young Tom Cruise’s need for speed? Over the top is an understatement when it comes to this film. But hey, so were most blockbuster films at the time

Hungry Like the Wolf

Yea it was sung by Duran Duran, and yes they’ve had more hits than you could possibly count, but nothing will ever beat Hungry Like the Wolf. Because even if you couldn’t possibly understand half of what Simon Le Bon was saying, you could always sing: “…and I’m hungry like the wooooolf”.

Comedy Shows

The golden era of TV comedy might have been the 90s, but the 80s pretty much set the tone. Shows like The Comic Strip, French & Saunders, Charles in Charge, Alf (!!!), Who’s the Boss, they made staying in on a Friday night with your folks actually fun. Good luck finding this today

Cyndi Lauper

Most people would call her Madonna BEFORE the actual Madonna. But seriously, Cyndi was in a league of her own. “Girls just wanna have fun” was one of THE top hits of the 80s with all the new wave pop hitting the charts then. Fancied yourself cool and a bit weird? You probably had Cyndi Lauper’s albums on repeat.

Mix Tapes

The original sexting method of youth. Fancied someone but didn’t know how to show it? Recording a bunch of your favourite tunes on Cassette was the way to show it. ‘Cause really, what girl could resist a playlist painstakingly made just for her over the course of several hours with a double-set cassette player?

Michael Jackson

The moonwalk, the glove, the tightly controlled disco beats, the bat-s*** crazy lyrics (Billie Jean anyone?). You can’t talk 80s music without mentioning MJ.

Groupies

What other time in modern history do you know of where it was cool to hang out with and follow a band across cities and countries with a bunch of other star-struck fans and not be called a loser without a job? Yep, groupies were SO in during the 80s. You weren’t a band without them!

Madonna

Because you probably remember that look your mom gave you when you first sang “Like a Virgin”. One of the original megastars of pop got her break in this era, and the world thanks her and her endless image changes forever.

Queen

How many bands do you know can pull an audience of 131,000!?!? Such was the legendary beauty of Queen. At first glance, you probably thought they were like any other generic band. Maybe even pretty weird. But I dare you not to be blown away by Freddie Mercury’s amazing voice.

Yep, the 80s were pretty epic.
